    EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION

    Meaning Clusters

    After Antietam,

    Lincoln issued

    the preliminary

    Emancipation Proclamation.

    As of
    January 1, 1863
    he declared that all slaves

    in states rebelling

    against the Union

    were free.

    It only freed slaves

    in the Confederate states.

    It did not address slavery

    in the border states.

    On
    January 1, 1863

    Lincoln issued the final

    Emancipation Proclamation.

    It authorized

    the recruitment

    of black soldiers

    into the Union Army.

    Union forces already

    sheltered escaped slaves

    as “contraband of war.”

    After the Proclamation,
    the Union Army recruited

    and trained regiments

    of black soldiers.

    They fought
    with distinction.

    About 178,000 blacks served

    in the United States

    Colored Troops.

    29,500 blacks served

    in the Union Navy.

    LINCOLN’S ASSASSINATION

    Meaning Clusters

    In 1864

    Lincoln won

    a second term

    as President

    He defeated

    his Democratic opponent

    George McClellan.

    Robert E. Lee

    surrendered within weeks

    of Lincoln's inauguration.

    Two day’s later

    Lincoln presented

    a generous reconstruction policy.

    On April 14, 1865

    he attended a play

    at Ford’s Theater.

    A disgruntled actor

    named John Wilkes Booth

    assassinated the president.

    Booth reportedly yelled

    “Sic semper tyrannis.”

    The Latin phrase means

    “Thus always to tyrants”

    and is Virginia’s state motto.

    Then he tripped

    on an American flag

    and broke his leg.

    Booth somehow

    managed to escape.

    Lincoln died

    the next morning.

    Authorities killed Booth

    during a shootout

    a few days later

    in the Virginia countryside.

    They captured

    and later executed

    his accomplices.
