    RENAISSANCE ART 1
    Meaning Clusters

    The “Renaissance” refers
    to
    Europe’s cultural
    and political “rebirth”
    after the dark ages.

    Humanists in
    Italy
    revived ancient learning
    of
    Greece and Rome.

    Brunelleschi studied
    ancient Roman buildings
    to understand the harmony
    of classical proportions.

    He reintroduced elements
    of classical architecture
    such as the columned arcade.

    His system
    of one-point,

    or linear perspective,

    converges lines

    to a single point
    in the distance
    called the vanishing point.

    Masaccio used
    a light source coming
    from a single direction

    to model figures

    with shadow.

    This projected depth
    beyond a flat painted surface.

    In religious painting
    of the late Middle Ages

    space opens out
    from the picture plane.

    It surrounds the viewer.

    Space recedes

    from the viewer's eye
    into the picture plane
    of early Renaissance works.

    Making the viewer

    the point of reference
    creates a realistic
    illusion of space.

    MANNERISM 1
    Meaning Clusters

    Mannerism comes
    from the Italian word
    maniera
    meaning “style”.

    Mannerist artists
    emphasized their own
    individual style
    above realistic depiction.

    Vasari believed
    excellence in painting
    demanded refinement,
    richness of invention,
    and virtuoso technique.

    Mannerists thought
    recreation of nature
    was less important
    than mental elaboration.

    Intellectual bias
    reflected the artist’s
    new societal status.

    Painters and sculptors
    were no longer
    mere craftsmen.

    They were regarded
    as highly as
    scholars and poets.

    Typical characteristics
    of Mannerism included:

    artificiality

    bizarre acid colors

    illogical compression
    of space

    elongated proportions

    exaggerated anatomy

    serpentine figures
