    BOB’S ROBOT CHICKEN

    Meaning Clusters

    Bob loved

    his robot chicken.

    Bob asked his father

    where robot chickens

    come from.

    His father said

    “Robot eggs.”

    Bob asked his father

    where robot eggs

    come from.

    His father answered

    “Robot chickens.”

    So Bob waited

    for his robot chicken

    to lay a robot egg.

    After a week

    with no robot eggs

    he kicked his robot chicken

    in frustration.

    It slammed

    against the wall

    and the robot chicken’s

    gyroscope rolled

    onto the floor.

    Bob thought

    the robot chicken

    finally laid

    a robot egg.

    So he put

    the robot egg

    in his sock drawer.

    The robot egg

    never hatched

    and the robot chicken

    kept running into furniture.

    Luckily, his father bought him

    a robot sea otter

    the following week

    which was cooler anyway.

    COCOA

    Meaning Clusters

    I asked her

    to join me

    for some Cocoa

    on a cold day.

    Kayoko raised

    her eyebrow.

    I explained

    it was a warm

    chocolate drink.

    She told me

    that in Japanese

    the word “koko”

    sounds exactly the same.

    except “koko”

    means “here”

    I admitted

    drinking the “here”

    would be difficult

    and cold.

    She smiled

    and agreed.

    We drank cocoa.

    Between the sips

    she told me

    there was no one

    with whom

    she would rather drink

    the “here”.

    or taste

    the “ima”

    I raised

    my eyebrow.

    “Now”

    she explained.

    COMMON TIME

    Meaning Clusters

    Sarah was

    a whole note.

    She often felt

    very lonely

    in a measure

    all to herself.

    She saw

    half note couples

    quarter note packs

    eighth note herds

    and gaggles

    of sixteenth notes

    frolicking together

    in other measures.

    She just didn’t

    fit in.

    She always

    took too long.

    So she stayed

    in her measure

    empty inside.

    She stared

    at the staff lines

    telling her what pitch

    she should sound.

    She stared

    at the bar lines

    that kept her

    in her measure.

    Then one day

    she realized

    that the lines
    just organized thought.

    She was just

    as important

    to the song

    as any other note.

    From that day on

    She sang

    without lines,

    without measure.
