    MUSASHI

    Meaning Clusters

    Miyamoto Musashi

    spent many years

    building a reputation

    as a fierce samurai.

    He meditated one day
    with a Buddhist monk
    named Takuan Soho.

    They sat

    in a stream.

    Musashi noticed
    a poisonous snake.

    It slithered over

    the monk

    like he was
    a rock or tree.

    When the snake

    approached Musashi
    he glared at it.

    Like many warriors
    before Musashi’s blade
    the snake fled.

    Musashi wept.

    He realized
    that he trained
    himself to win
    every confrontation.

    He also realized
    Takuan trained
    himself to live
    without confrontation.

    Musashi knew
    that if he allowed

    his awareness to slip
    for a second
    he might die.

    He decided the monk
    may have found
    a better solution.

    STEVE THE BAIJI DOLPHIN

    Meaning Clusters

    Steve had

    a beautiful voice.

But he never liked the way

    his dorsal fin looked.

    All the other dolphins

    in the Yangtze River

    were practically blind

    but that didn’t stop Steve

    from worrying

    about his fin.

    He wished

    things would change.

    So when dams and boats

    filled the river

    with more and more

    mud and pollution

    Steve sang a happy song.

    Now no one

    would see his fin.

    The loud boats

    made it difficult

    to hear.

    The loud boats

    took away the fish

    Steve loved to eat.

    And before long

    no other dolphins

    lived in the river

    where they could appreciate

    Steve’s beautiful voice.

    Steve sang alone

    accompanied by

    droning boats.

    But at least

    no one would ever see

    his misshapen fin.
